Thanao people
The Thanao people belong to the Mon-Khmer group and are considered to be of mixed Shan Palaung blood among the three "'W"'-Palang sub-groups. They were different from the Mon people, who were based in the Shan State of Myanmar, and who migrated to the southern part of Shan State (Southern) due to the invasion and occupation of the Shan State by the Mon-Khmer tribe, and were considered to be the remnants of the Shan State. The Thanao people consider Taungpo Hla Village (Tano Ywa) in Kalaw Township of Shan State (Southern) as the main village of Thanao. This is because Taungpo Hla Village, which is about four miles wide in the east and west and only about five miles wide in the south and north, is a village exclusively inhabited by the Thanao people. In the past, there was a beautiful mound in the southwest of the village.
